Gilding the Lily with a Goatee

*Perfectionism is a curse!  It slows down my writing and posting and then circumstances change!  Of course nothing I do comes out perfectly, so why do I do it? I wrote this a while ago, posted it on the fan club site and then decided to make a post for the Salon which required of course – photos!  Anyone reading this will agree with me that when you are searching your Adam photo libraries for the perfect illustration, time stands still.  You become hypnotized and before you know it, the cock crows and the sun rises.  By now, the story has moved on and I either scrap it or update.  The saga of the hirsute Adam continues…..

Many men grow facial hair to correct flaws or to distract the onlooker’s eye from an unattractive aspect of the face. Women perform similar sleight of hand tricks with make-up, jewelry and hair. Actually Adam has all those in his arsenal of beauty ammunition too, yet he needs so little help to enhance that visage!

Does Adam need to disguise a flaw? Let’s do a little inventory of needed facial enhancements. Does he need to create a chin where none exists? Camouflage a too-long upper lip? Lengthen a square face? Minimize a protruding proboscis? A resounding “NO” to all of the above and let’s face it – the look requires daily maintenance. Hmm…… working on the mustache or tweeting fans? Trimming the beard or cuddling with a loved one? Touching up the colour or shopping! Really, which options would you recommend?

Is Adam attempting to distract from an unattractive facial feature? What unattractive feature? I can assure you that along with millions of others, I have researched both sides in profile, full-face, three-quarter aspect and even the back nape of the neck. Nothing, nada, niente, rien, zip, zero….. to hide.

There is something that I did learn from Seventeen Magazine when I first learned to apply make-up. Draw the onlookers eye to your best feature, the focal point in a room if

Please note jaw and neckline - only

you  will. Check out J-Lo, the Most Beautiful Person according to People. While each feature of her face is exceptional, she will emphasize her eyes with dramatic make-up and pale lipstick to keep us focused on her eyes. Lips prettier than eyes? Skip the sequined eyes and strut the Stiletto Red lipstick.

I don’t think there is any argument to the statement – “Adam Lambert’s eyes are non plus ultra”. Eyes are the portals to the soul, the personality, the character, the thoughts. Perfectly arched eyebrows are a frame, further drawing us in. The direct, unabashed gaze, the “you are the sexiest person in the room” look, bemused, amused, saucy, coy and kill-you-dead-in-your-tracks expressions. Does he rehearse in a mirror to perfect these expressions? Doubtful because they are not facile, they are just the form his features take to reflect how he feels or wants us to think he feels. Rarely if ever, does a cryptic message telegraph from that face.

Pale eyes like the blue topaz of Adam’s reflect light so they sparkle in the beams, forcing you to look there. They look wide open, like the lid removed from the well, inviting us to look inside. We do, seeking treasure.

We’ve seen the angry Adam rarely, just when confronting the feckless papps or interfering security personnel stage-side. He can work the eyebrows, eyes, the scowl, voice and body to intimidate. Does he need a beard to help?

The facial hair is a second focal point of his face and moves our gaze from his eyes to his beard, not even his attractively freckled lips, just the dark outline of the goatee, emphasizing perfect teeth and then back to his eyes – it’s Adam Lambert facial ping-pong! I’m dizzy already!

Perhaps he just wants to present a more swaggery, swashbuckling look – Errol Flynn’s Robin Hood or Captain Blood? Maybe an homage to the mucho macho Village People and just like the Village People, fun for a while. If Adam wants to play Pirates & Damsels – I’m in!

Is Adam any less handsome avec la barbe, mais non! I just miss the focus on his eyes, which speak to us in a way the beard cannot.

Adam’s Eyes need their own section in this fan club. They’ve been photographed in every way imaginable, inspired art and poetry, new adjectives have been invented and they are instantly identifiable. How many times have I celebrated them? I just found another justification to write a few hundred words about them and post some photos!  Of course a few other photos to illustrative other attractive aspects of the Adam facial landscape help too.

I hope I don’t wake up to the latest photo to discover Adam has shaved everything and gone ginger!

Am not sure about the goatee. Maybe he does this to balance the dark hair all around his face – a frame, if you will. Or maybe he doesn’t like his “lip freckles.” Having watched Glee tonight, we are all painfully aware of our flaws and try to compensate for them in odd ways. Would Adam put LIP FRECKLES on his white shirt? One of the things that captivated me about him was his eyebrows and how perfectly they frame his eyes. I do like the facial ping-pong. Always keeping us thinking, doesn’t he? You gotta love that! Thanks, Juneau.

      Hi Easty!
Women are really good at noticing flaws since so many of us begin our day by looking in a 5X to 10X magnifying mirror! No one can look perfect in one of these.

I think Adam gets bored easily, is a bit quixotic in his nature and changing his hair, make-up, wardrobe look, footwear and facial hair is all part of the fun for him. And it keeps us on our toes!

      Easty,
Funny that you mentioned Glee-I kept thinking about Adam during that part, and wondered what he would put on his shirt. He’s certainly in the if-you-hate-it-change-it school of thought. I remember some of his comments about how he thought Michael Jackson’s evolving looks (or devolving, if you ask most people) were kind of fascinating.
Maybe he’d put “Ginger” on the shirt too.

I forgot to say that he looks damn sexy with facial hair. But of course I prefer him without .

Perusing pictures of Adam until the cock crows, eh? *unusual metaphorical images coming to mind* 😉 . Hirsute Adam? Not my favorite – a bit too Mephisto for my tastes, though that idea has a certain charm. He’s beautiful, so why shouldn’t he play and experiment and enjoy? He obviously loves changing it up! This, too, shall pass. Nice piece (the article, that is… )

Ha! I laughed when I wrote that because the reference is to my stay at Juneau’s farm where I shared a space with the chickens, rooster and the goats that she forgot to tell me about before I went to bed! Sounded like a flamenco troup was practicing in the next room.

Can’t you imagine getting lured into a little trouble by Mephistopheles? Reminds me of the FYE video character.

      Thank you,

        Poetry? Hummm… Silliness? Yes!

Give us a wink, then, you devilish boy
Twirl your ‘stasch, leer – a crumb to enjoy…
        Though we love you bare-faced
        Don’t shave it in haste
Grow some horns, dear, c’mon don’t be coy!

ok, what the frick is goin’ on with Adam Lambert? I’m almost starting to think he is the antichrist with his charm and wit. I know, most of you won’t know what I meant by that.

    • April 28, 2011 8:01 am

      Clare,
Well, if Adam had suddenly started doing or saying evil things to go with the beard, I might be worried. But since he talks about kindness and love AND practices it, there is no problem here.

I can relate to getting lost in the research. How many times have I said just one more picture/article/tweet/etc.? Before you know it, 3 hours have passed and you’ve missed the seminar you were planning on going to. Adam’s eyes are mesmerizing aren’t they?
Michele Collins called him our favorite human with Alaskan Huskie eyes – which was perfect.
I don’t mind the facial hair, as long as it’s well-groomed, which with Adam it always is. I don’t think I would really like a full beard – that would cover up way too much of his face.
And with Adam you really can’t get too attached to any look, because it will be replaced by another soon.
I love the way you never know what his look will be. I hope he never changes that.

Hasn’t anyone noticed the correlation of Adam’s facial hair and him out of town with a boyfriend (Drake + NOLA, Sauli +NYC)? How about the question “shaved or unshaved” and he answered unshaved. Come on… its a macho boy thing. Just imagine how liberating it must be to have a few days of not shaving and having a scruffy beard. Of course our Adam cant leave it scruffy and has to play dress up with that facial hair… then we get the benefit of watching him take on a new role… different each time. This is way more fun the playing with dolls ever was. Adam = my entertainment. (ok you can shave it now)

“I have looked into your eyes with my eyes. I have put my heart near your heart.” I don’t know the source of this quote but it speaks volumes for me about Adam’s eyes.

I’d be in the “grow facial hair to hide flaws” camp, to hide scars, but those scars are too much for fur, can’t get anythin’ to grow that doesn’t look tufted & aweful. It looks like a sparsely attended tumbleweed convention. Now & then I get lazy & let the crossword puzzle scruff grow a bit, largely cuz shavin’ is also an ordeal. But I thnk for Adam it’s a matter of play, change-up, the fun of a new “costume”, as ya said. Can’t imagine a flaw to cover up. If he has one, I love it too. Somethin’ he’s teachin’ me comes to mind tho before I knuckle down & shave: no more hidin’…

Watching Adam Lambert make-up tutorial videos today, mesmerised by the transformation process, his embrace of it – in stark contrast with society’s self-imposed aversion to it; celebrating expression versus repressing expression.

Beyond the make-up we sense his need to escape from a prison cell. Currently, right-wing politicians, in the United States: Florida, Texas, and in parts of Europe – genuine fascists – want to shame people like Adam and impose the Handmaid’s Tale on us, but Adam ignores them all. In this respect he’s courageous and we relate to that courage.

When we watch him apply make-up we’re watching a man rebel against societal oppression. Incidentally, I think he looks best when he’s bare faced with a light touch of eyeliner – less is more, but at the end of the day what shines through more than any of the products he uses on his face, is his inner-confidence. He’s comfortable in his own skin, which is what we all want. That’s the ‘beauty’ we all aspire to.
