Adam Lambert, Grown-Ass Man

Written five years ago but never posted. It remains timely and now seemed like as good moment as any to share it.

Adam Lambert is now, officially, declaratively and authentically, a grown-ass man. From his gradual take-over of American Idol to his latest single, he has what? Matured? Ripened? I’ve spent days trying to choose the right word for the process we have not just witnessed, but lived, since 2009, albeit a bit ahead of our Wonder Boy. We know that success cannot be measured by airplay and I think Adam is finally there too.

When I first heard “Two Fux”, I responded “Welcome to our world Adam, what took you so long?” With this song, you gave us the mantra to express ourselves “Namaste Right Here” should be emblazoned on the backs of our glitterized biker jackets, collar up, hair jacked and the mascara and lipstick just so, as we sip our cocktails before the show, conserving energy and fortifying; there is always an after party.

Almost from the first moment we saw him, and that moment happened at different times for each of us, we knew Adam had chutzpah. From his choice of audition song, to his willingness to gamble with different interpretations of classic, popular songs with eyeliner and costumes,  lighting and staging….

Any wonder Spike, Brian and Roger saw him as someone gutsy enough to follow Freddie and play alongside Brian and Roger while making each Queen song his own? On a grand scale no less.

But this swaggery self confidence didn’t happen over night, or smoothly. In fits and starts, Adam has finally reached attitudinal adulthood. It actually took the Glamberts much longer since we began the process so much later, but once started, we whipped through the stages in a nanosecond of life. Some observers might consider our passions and behaviour as chronologically regressive, but they would be wrong. We progressed from surreptitious video watching under dark cover, to clandestine online conversations with pseudonyms, to strutting our proud Glambertina selves through the lobbies and gathering areas around performance venues. On social media, we post our photos unfettered by social convention. Here we are! We will sing, dance, hoot, holler and cheer at each song and sigh with delight at each perfect, soul stirring note. Sigh, swoon,

We are so relaxed about the lack of radio play now, we don’t give two fux, nor does Adam, but it seems to have taken him longer to realize it doesn’t matter anymore. Success as an artist is not measured by air play.

So now that we’re all grown up, where does he go from here? Do we care whose music he sings? Bowie tribute coming up! Puccini maybe? More country? Not a dry eye among the country music stars when he performed Girl Crush. Broadway?  TV? Rocky Horror, Pretty Little Liars, Glee. We know his voice hasn’t peaked yet, so we know the best is yet to come.

I love this . Adam has always been and is true to himself. And Puccini….nailed it! Philanthropist….nailed it! Fabulous solo artist ! And touring as frontman with the biggest and best rock concert/event on the planet. I must admit I don’t like the reference as frontman because it seems too pedestrian/ one dimensional for Adam.

100% agree, Adam is a grown ass man and won’t stand down for nobody. Also, now in 2022, he wowed us with his epic performance with Queen at the Platinum Jubilee, “Nessun Dorma”, plus his heartwrenching version of “Mad About the Boy”.
