Adam Lambert – Venetian Voodoo

Adam at Venetian PublicityHow miraculous to see Adam back where he belongs, strutting in front of an enthusiastic throng of live bodies during his current run at The Venetian in Las Vegas. We couldn’t join the in-person revelry but loved the vicarious thrill as friends shared videos and social media posts. After the long, pandemic drought, it must have been like plunging into the cool waters of an oasis. Or, since this is Adam F Lambert, a smoldering cauldron of spicy fun, with a little green absinthe of love’s bitter disappointments drizzled in.

The show opens with sexy Halloween-themed For Your Entertainment and Evil in the Night, followed by two all-time favorite covers, Ring of Fire and Marry the Night (I believe the first time he’s done this now-legendary Glee performance live). Staying with the Halloween theme, the mood shifts through Voodoo, Ready to Run, to the desolate Ghost Town. Adam then twists his vocal coils around us as only he can with sexy-angsty Running (wolves!), Chokehold, Sleepwalker, Mad World, and Can’t Let You Go. Just when he’s wrung every tear out of our eyes, he is back on the troubled romance market with After Hours, Roses, Love Don’t, On the Moon, and of course Whataya Want From Me. And what the public wants from Adam is some Queen, and so he gives us Stone Cold Crazy, Dragon Attack, and Another One Bites the Dust. (Not my personal Queen favorites; I wonder what goes into the calculus of determining which Queen songs he can perform…). The show ends, fittingly, with Adam reclaiming his own voice with Superpower and Overglow.

One could say that Adam has pulled off a little voodoo with his career! The magnetic pull of his voice and charisma are still very much alive. I thought these lyrics from Jimi Hendrix’s Voodoo Child were fitting:

Say, I make love to you in your sleep,
And lord knows you felt no pain
‘Cause I’m a million miles away
And at the same time I’m right
Here in your picture frame
‘Cause I’m a voodoo child
Lord knows, I’m a voodoo child
Well my arrows are made of desire
From far away as Jupiter’s sulfur mines…

Adam also performed “Overglow” for the encore but we haven’t found it on YouTube yet… if you have a link, please share!
