PRESS AND BLOG PICKS

ED KAISER / POSTMEDIA

GigCity.ca – Adam Lambert gives new life to Queen “…the two remaining Queen members Brian May and Roger Taylor wisely recruited the only singer in the world who could come close to filling Freddie’s boxing boots. Adam Lambert is a supernaturally gifted singer, and about as flambouyant as a pop star can possibly be. He made about seven costume changes at Rogers Place Tuesday night. After singing Killer Queen while wearing what he called the “gayest suit you’re ever seen” – and killing it, both song and suit – while sitting atop a giant robot head (in honour of the 40th anniversary of News of the World), he said, “I just wanted to give you guys a little head.” Actually, it was a big head. But way to set the tone, man. Girls in the audience laughed hysterically at every gay joke he told. What’s with that?”

Edmonton Journal – Queen + Adam Lambert hit all the right notes at Rogers Place “As with the classic, original lineup, Queen + Adam Lambert were at their best when they fell headlong into the bombast. Fat Bottomed Girls was as hilariously ridiculous as you’d expect, Crazy Little Thing Called Love and Killer Queen rocked, and I Want It All was a perfect statement of purpose for both singer and band. The short snippet of We Will Rock You that opened the night before Hammer to Fall (from 1984’s The Works) was a Pavlovian exercise in audience salivation.”

Omaha World-Herald – Adam Lambert on fronting Queen: ‘This is crazy. This is my life’ “The underlying similarity is … a good song being a good song. That’s why theirs has stood the test of time. It’s got heart, it’s got great melody and it’s performed with passion. Those things will never go out of style. People always respond to those three ingredients.”

Omaha World Herald – Review: Queen + Adam Lambert bring a grand, theatrical rock show to Omaha “…I can’t think of anyone better. No one else would dye their hair red and wear nearly a dozen costumes of leather and sequins. No one else would crush those vocal runs. And no one else would be that fabulously theatrical in their performance.”

Kansas City Star – Queen plus Adam Lambert faithfully revive the sounds of an eminent, unique band in KC. “Throughout the show, Lambert paid respects to Mercury and his larger-than-life reputation. He also deferred to May and Taylor, calling them “rock Gods” and “legends.” But he did not back down from commanding the stage, vocally, physically and otherwise, and imparting upon the show his own personality and flavor.”

Minneapolis Star Tribune – Queen finds new king in singer and frontman Adam Lambert “…That’s Adam Lambert, the “American Idol” runner-up from 2009. In 2012, he joined up with two remaining members of the British rock band Queen, which had pretty much disappeared after the 1991 death of singer Freddie Mercury, for some concerts. Now they have rebuilt the band to surprising heights, drawing more than 15,000 people to jam-packed Xcel Energy Center on Friday and filling arenas around the world….Heretofore the pomp and over-the-topness of Queen had been missing. Suddenly Lambert summoned newfound passion on “Somebody to Love” and camped it up Elvis-like on “Crazy Little Thing Called Love.” The singer found his shining moment on “Who Wants to Live Forever,” the kind of power ballad that made him such a sensation on “American Idol.”

Twin Cities Pioneer Press – Queen triumphs at St. Paul’s X with assist from Adam Lambert “Lambert may well be the best match of them all. Friday night, he didn’t do a full-out Mercury impression, like Arnel Pineda does of Steve Perry in Journey. At times, he certainly sounded like Mercury, but Lambert brought his own flair to the songs. He also conjured up some of the campy, playful sexiness of Mercury, who showed up on film during several key moments of the show, including the end of a monstrous “Bohemian Rhapsody” that closed the main set.”

Pink News – Meet DC’s incredible new genderfluid superhero “DC Comics is set to introduce a character called Doctor Endless, the first genderfluid person in the new DC Universe…Doctor Endless will be tracking down Sebastian Faust, a US government operative who has gone rogue…Neil Gaiman, who created The Sandman series in the late 80s, still has to give his approval for DC to use the character with Sandman references.”

PROJECT ANGEL FOOD GIG

NewNowNext – George Michael To Receive Elizabeth Taylor Humanitarian Award Posthumously. Adam Lambert will also pay tribute to the late musician with a medley of his biggest hits. “The nonprofit works to nourish sick people battling a critical illness, and said in a statement that Michael made a donation at the height of the AIDS epidemic in 1993, a time the charity says it needed him the most.”

    Adam’s playground comes to life
Riding a trishaw in reminiscent style
    Cling cling…he rings the bell
Sure brings back memories as a child
Of my riding on a trishaw with Mom and siblings
Laden with groceries from the market
Yep, cling cling ! the same ole bell
    Signals we are home
Now Adam rides this antique 3-wheeler
Throws flowers at the enthused packed audience
In a whole different contextual ambiance
    Next up…Sitting atop a humanoid
That rises from the stage, rolling its eyeballs
Who is sitting on my head…
    Be careful now…
Brian looks up at playful KillerQueen
In a purplish suit of floral pink
His full-throated vocals spread their wings
In sync with superb Queen harmony
Giving a face-lift to Bohemian Rhapsody with Mercury
Love this latest rendition of rock symphony
    Hues of powerful multi-colour lasers
White, silver, blue, red, gold and green
    Scan the electrifying scene
QAL 2017 … an ostentatious kaleidoscope of high-tech fancy
Adam’s vocals take the grand prize of pageantry !

I like this gallery view of Bohemian Rhapsody…gives an aerial perspective. like Adam walking up to the screen area; also arrangement of BR more wholesome; Adam sings the bulk but ends with Freddie Mercury.
