Lighting and Sound – Queen + Adam Lambert – A wonderful tribute to the usually overlooked geniuses who engineer the sound and light of an arena rock show, with ample helpings of Adam-love thrown in! “…that strange allure of startling vocal ability coupled with eyes that could render a thirteen year old public school boy naked and willing with one glance. He’s dangerous to watch, his performance teeters on the edge; one percentage point more on the camp gas pedal and the whole edifice would crash and burn. Actually, when I recollect the 1986 tour, Freddie had that about him too, but that’s not to underplay Lambert’s outstanding vocal ability, which is what makes it all OK…
…that’s what makes Adam – he has a great voice but it’s not Freddie’s, he has his own personality. And he’s happy to be there; that puts a buzz in the audience. I’ve never heard an audience sing so loud and so often, and these are not youngsters. Adam is very warm with the audience and they accept him…He adds: “In total there are 18 mixes on my SD7, four of which are ear mixes. The most vulnerable area is the band vocals – getting the balance right is important. Although Adam wants very different things in his mix, in particular he doesn’t want the top-end ofhis voice; Brian and Roger want a full bandwidth of his voice, so I have separate channel and compressor on Adam’s voice for each of them to keep him constant…
…Gary Stokes has been there since just after those initial gigs in Eastern Europe that Rob Collins mentioned. “I’m mainly a front-of-house engineer, and in a way that’s the kind of mix Adam needs. I do a lot of Canadian acts, although I now live in the US – K.D. Lang in particular, and Sarah McGloughlin the last few years. The connection to Adam was through K.D. Lang’s management, who also handle Adam. This gig is very unusual, which seems to be typical for me these days – I seem to get called when others struggle. Adam likes a very produced musical mix which is why my FOH approach works in my favour – this is not a monitor gig by any stretch.”…
…It was my observation that the sheer joy of the band on stage, conveyed intimately on screen, goes some way to driving the energy in the room. Taylor, for one, knows just how to give little glances to camera that twang the emotions.”
Brian May talks about Adam Lambert’s Queen transformation: ‘He’s really evolved, hugely’ ““Adam has really transformed, I must say,” May told muzyka.onet. “And, he shares that with Freddie. Freddie was always good, but he transformed himself from a singer who could do this or this into this really sort of god-like performer. Adam is the same. He’s really evolved, hugely. He’s much more comfortable in his shoes. He’s much more confident with an audience. In fact, it is like he was born to it. He’s grown into the part.””
Posted at QAL Fans united: Peter Richard Leslie Freestone (Phoebe), Freddie’s former personal assistant, put his thoughts in about the QAL show last night…(thanks @NorthernSpirit for sharing this.) Be sure to check out the response from fans!
Ok, I know I risk losing some facebook friends and starting a verbal war, but last night I saw Q+AL for the second time in as many weeks and was really happy to have been there. Last night I was surrounded by 16,499 friends, fans and strangers who nearly lifted the roof off the O2 Arena here in Prague. I know Freddie is not on the stage, please believe me, I know, but I witnessed a great show. Queen, for me, were always about the show, and they are really producing the goods. And I for one, am so happy to see the smiles on the faces of Brian and Roger. Every opera has always been created around a specific person’s voice. If the music stopped when that person couldn’t perform any more, the opera scene today would look very bare. Surely it is the same for any good music, it is there to be interpreted so that the music can go on. Adam Lambert gives a valid and very good interpretation of Queen music, never trying to imitate, just giving his all for the music of QUEEN. p.s. I will not be getting involved in any discussions on this post, I’ve seen what happens on other pages.
Review: Queen and Adam Lambert Concert in Tauron Krakow Arena –
English translation via GT (courtesy of TALCvids). “Is Queen without Freddie Mercury is still Queen? Such doubts persisted every time Brian May raised the cult formation of new singers. Several thousand spontaneously responsive and people singing at a concert in Krakow Arena seems, however, to dispel any doubts – Adam Lambert in the role of Queen singer works superbly, and Freddie certainly would be proud of him.”
