Chapter 38 – FORGOTTEN

The kids were screaming, everyone covering their ears from that awful sound when the two men dropped to the floor. Lover and Twin had turned around to grab the kids and block their view of the dead men. None of them, not even Twin, had even been that close to gunshot.

“Sorry ‘bout dat, folks.” Pimp Dealer tried to put a look of regret on his face. “Didn’t mean to scare y’all or nothin’.  Dat’s why I used de silencer.” He gagged that awful chuckle of his. “Well, I guess you could kinda say it was sort a preview of things to come.” He looked like a snake, a real one. Lover and Twin looked at each other, each one thinking, “No, he wouldn’t.” And then, “Yes, he would.”

Again Pimp Dealer could read it on their faces. “That’s right,” he said. “Each an’ ev’ry one of ya. And Peanut, you goin’ last. I want you to see it.” He slithered over to Twin. “And when I’m done I’m gonna go find dat little bitch baby gurl of ours an’ turn her inta you.”

Just then some hip, happy noises of welcome came from upstairs and, abruptly, stopped. “Sound like mah friend fin’lly got here,” Pimp Dealer announced. “Come on down,” he called.

The door to the stairs opened a bit more. Do-Good came down the steps.

“It’s got awful quiet up dere,” said Pimp Dealer. “What happened?”

“Whatchu you wanted,” answered Do-Good. “They’re done.”

Angel had gone over to the Guest House to see about Niecy. The Security Guard was there. Niecy wasn’t.

The Security Guard had been fired on the spot. Had Neicy been snatched? Something told Angel the answer was, “No.” He didn’t even question where–or who–the answer had come from. He sensed not to tell anyone, either.

Like Mommie, Niecy had kept her wits about her. After the Security guard had checked on her and then wandered over to the Garage to visit with the other Security man, Niecy had snuck out of the Guest House and up the back stairs and down the hall. That way she could hear everything even if she couldn’t see it.

Dunc, Exec and Partner had been in Uncle’s office, talking about Uncle and Mommie. They’d sounded worried about something, something about “the money” and “the drop off” and “the plan.” Dunc was through with worrying. He said he was going to call the police, regardless of what the note said. Exec had followed him down to his office. Partner stayed in Uncle’s office, acting like he was too sore to walk. When Dunc and Exec were gone, Niecy heard him make a phone call.

“Hey, how’s it going over there?” Pause. “Oh, yeah, y’all got ‘em? Good. Everybody? Pause. “No, she’s over in the Guest House. You don’t need her, though; you got the other two.” Long pause. “Uh huh, yeah, he’s doing it now. Y’all better do whatever you’re gonna do and get outta there.” Longer pause. “Really? Pimp Dealer would do that to his own daughter?” Pause. “Man, that’s cold. Twin doesn’t know Niecy’s his, does she?” Another long pause. “Wow, he is sick.” Pause. “Yeah, we’re just about done here. I’m gonna have him drop me off and then I’ll be over there. Give me maybe an hour or so.” Pause. “Yeah, I know where his other place is.” He repeated an address not too far away from the school where all three kids went. Partner was talking on the phone again. “Yeah, I can do that, I’ll bring some with me.”

Niecy was sick, too. This could only mean one thing. Pimp Dealer was her father.

She had to run all the way down the hill and over to the main street to get the bus but she’d done it. It took her another half hour to get to the house. She snuck around to the side, first making sure there wasn’t anybody there. She’d learned a lot about hiding from Twin.

Three Crew members were sitting on the back porch drinking beers.

“I think he’d do it, man. He don’t care about that Rock Star’s kids. He jus’ wanna make that Peanut hurt. That’s what all this is about.”

“Yeah, but Man and Guy are over there. Why don’t he have them do it? Man likes to do women and I know he’s always wanted another piece of her. Hell, if she wasn’t Pimp Dealer’s all this time Man woulda done both, too. Had her and done her.”

“Oh, come on. Man wouldn’t be able ta get it up if he tried.” All three men laughed at that. They knew it wasn’t true but it was still funny.

“You know, I always did think that little girl might be Pimp’s. You ever notice how he was around her?”

“Hey, all I noticed was how scared she was of him, like he’d done something to her already. ‘Member how she used ta cry when she’d leave her alone with him? I always wondered if he was twisted enough ta do dat to his own child.”

“Well, he twisted enough ta do anything ta anybody. Hey, wonder how things going.”

“You mean that Cabin up off dat trail? Yeah, we should be hearin’ from Do-Good soon. You wanna ‘nother beer?”

“Yeah, might as well. Ain’t nothing going on around here.”

Niecy had already made her way into the house and looked around. She looked in the big bedroom and saw a knife on the dresser. It was just what she’d need. She snuck back out of the house and was on her way to the Cabin. She still had enough money from Uncle and Dunc’s room to grab the tourist bus to the trailhead.

“I’m coming,” she said to herself, “and they won’t even know I’m there until it’s too late.”

Niecy was on a mission. One way or another, she was getting her family back.
