It wasn’t OK after Starlight’s message to Lover but things were definitely better. When Lover and the Rock Star came back from his office, where they’d made the call to Banker and to Attorney, there was a sense of calm that hadn’t been there before. Partner wondered what had happened to change their attitude. For the first time he was afraid. Something had happened in the Rock Star’s office that he didn’t know about. That could be bad.

Twin had gone over to the Guest House to check on Niecy. She was sleeping on the bed in the first floor bedroom, a book opened beside her. Twin could tell she’d been crying. She stood there for a few minutes looking at her beautiful daughter. What if it had been Niecy? What if her life was at stake? She decided not to think about that. After all, there were other children in trouble, children in her family. She had to have her wits about her for whatever was going to come next.

She heard Lover talking to the Security Guard about “something” and about keeping an eye on Niecy, how smart she was and how she could outwit him in a second if he gave her the chance. Twin smiled. Yes, it was true, her little girl had been through a lot and still had her wits about her, too. That‘s something she’d gotten from her mother, she thought. I’m not her Mommie for nothing. I’d kill anyone who came near her, that’s for sure.

Lover had two personal wardrobes on rollers with him. She knew they’d be stopping off at Attorney’s office to get the money. Twin couldn’t even imagine what that much money would look like, much less whether she’d be able to pull half of it. But Twin reassured her that the wardrobes had plenty of room. Besides, he told her on the way to Attorney’s, he and the Rock Star had come up with a plan of their own. She and Lover were taking half of the money with them. The kids would have to be released and safely home before they’d find out where the second half of the ransom was. They’d bring a laptop of their own, Attorney ready to show them the second half so the kidnappers would know it was real.

“Is this gonna work?” asked Twin, after they’d picked up the $12.5 million and were on their way to the drop-off place.

“Oh, yeah,” Lover said. “These people are greedy. They see another $12.5 million just waiting for them and they’ll go for it, believe me.

Exec and Partner were still at the Mansion with the Rock Star, who was nervous about the secret plan he and Lover had come up with. Yes, Starlight had sent her message but he knew how convoluted her plans could be sometimes. And he was right, they could be. Hadn’t her plan to get him down from the Mountain House caused all kinds of difficulties? But he had to admit, her promise had come true. He and Lover had emerged much stronger men, their love, too. And they had married and there were children. What had she said when he’d finally found out about Lover’s heartfelt strength? That there would be “generations to come” for each of them.

Then he got it, what had calmed Lover. Generations, plural. Both the kids would have children.

Twin saw the drop-off place first. Lover turned into the driveway and they got out of the car. The kidnappers had instructed them to leave the money behind the house. They got out of the car, got the money out of the trunk and headed up the driveway.

As they turned the corner there were two men, older but in good shape. They had guns pointed at them. They were Man and Guy.

They didn’t remember getting there. All they remembered was being walked to another car and made to put the money in the trunk before being cuffed with their hands behind them and pushed into the back seat. Although they struggled and kicked as hard as they could, cloths were held over their faces. They were out.

When they got to the Cabin in the woods, they were pulled out of the car and led through the small house to a door that had a row of locks around most of the doorjam. Then they were uncuffed and pushed down the stairs into the dark. They heard the locks. When their eyes adjusted they looked around. There were the kids, crying and cringing in the corner.

The four didn’t know what to think or feel. They were overjoyed to see each other and scared for all of them. Lover tried to remember Starlight’s message but that didn’t feel very  comforting at the moment. But, as her ethereal Spirit, she’d never lied to him or Angel. What could she have possibly meant if not that things would work out?  What would they have to endure before all of this came to an end?

They heard the locks being undone and saw the door open. Lover thought for a moment about rushing the two men to give the other three captives a chance to escape but then realized how foolish that would be. And there seemed to be more than two men now, maybe four, maybe five.

Two men started down the steps. They had flashlights. These weren’t the two men who’d brought them here. Then Lover heard two familiar voices. It had been years since he’d heard one; the other he recognized as having heard more recently. He prayed he was wrong about both.

“My, my, look who’s come to visit.”

“Yeah, he said we’d be having guests soon.” Lover’d been right about the first voice, although it took him a second to believe he was actually hearing it. It was older than he remembered but it was definitely him. As if that weren’t bad enough, he recognized the second voice right away. He’d heard that one just a couple of years ago.

The two men flicked on the overhead light. The captives were temporarily blinded. It took a few seconds before they got their sight back.

It was Lover’s worst nightmare. There before him stood Pimp Dealer and Reporter.
