Chapter 16 – DAYLIGHT IN THE DARKNESS

Six years after Mommy told them of Twin’s death, it was Little Bro’s and then Sis’s turn to graduate from high school. They’d both taken jobs while in school to help Mommy out and both still worked at them. Little Bro had a job in a barber shop.

One day Man and Guy came in. Unknown to them, Lil’ Bro was in the back sweeping up.

“Yeah,” said Guy. “He still got her. Fine little bitch.”

Man nodded. “You ‘member that day we snatched her up?”

“Yeah, I ‘member. I got some, too. I’d had my eye on that for a good while.”

“You sho’ did. Always said you’d get her.”

              “Sho’ you right,” sneered Guy.

Man laughed. “You should’ve seen yourself.” He got quiet, thinking about something. “You know, it’s too bad Pimp Dealer never did find Peanut.”

Guy had to laugh at that one. “Shee-it, that boy sho nuff did a job on Snake, ain’t he?”

“Yeah, he sho’ did,” chuckled Guy. “Pimp Dealer got back for him, though.”

“Um hm, he sho’ did. Wonder if she still as fine as she was when we got her fo’ him?”

“Don’t know.” Guy thought about it. “You know, I’m kinda surprised he still got her. I’da thought she be worn out by now.”

“Naw,” said Man. “Young bitches like that hang in dere tough.” He started thinking again. “How old she was when we got her?”

Guy remembered like it was yesterday. “Seventeen, man.” It was his turn to think about it. “Man, dat was good.

“Sho’ nuff was,” Man said. “‘Specially with dat birthmark on her butt.” He chuckled at the memory. “Good thing dat other needle was ready.”

“Yeah, she got it, ain’t she?” Guy chuckled himself. “I tell ya, dat was some good shit.”

In the back, Lil Bro almost dropped the broom. It was the birthmark that did it.

Sis was braiding one of the “ladies” hair at the beauty parlor when Braid started talking to the “lady” getting a Weave next to her.

“Yeah, he took her wit him to South America. Can you believe dat? Shee-it, it was hard ‘nough fo’ ta get him take me ta breakfast.”

“Shoot, you think he’d leave that at home? She done run twice already.”

The Weave lady gave a look at Braid and nodded at Sis. Weave was obviously saying, “Watch yo’ mouth, bitch.” Braid nodded and went into “bidness talk.” Sis was smart, though. It didn’t take her long to decode the conversation.

              “High yella bitch.”

              “Got snatched alright.”

“Yeah, but Pimp Dealer really wanted that Peanut, though.”

“Well, he seem happy wit what he got.”

              “Yeah, he do.”

“Remember how Do-Good had all those needles ready? Almos’ seem like he wanted ta keep her out of it.”

“Um hm, seem like he was tryin’ ta protect her or something.”

“Yeah, I ‘member that. An’ ‘member dat birthmark on her ass, too.”

“Sho you right. Pimp Dealer made us clean her up. ‘Member dat?”

Nasty chuckle. “Yeah, well, I think she kinda enjoyed that bath you was givin’ her.”

“Oh, dat wasn’t me. Do-Good had another needle in her.”

“Bet dat jus’ made it better.”

              Another nasty chuckle.

“Maybe it did. I think it just knocked her out, though.”

“Was good practice for dem flicks he put her in.”

“Yeah, she do seem to enjoy ’em. Can’t nobody be dat good a actor.”

“Well, if she weren’t so good at what she do, he’da killed her by now. Or got Do-Good to do it. She know dat much.”

“Yeah, he woulda. Sometime’ I think he be wantin’ to do the whole fam’ly, he like doin’ that so much. She try to run again, Do-Good just might.” Braid paused, like she was thinking about something. “You notice he seem to have some kinda special interest in her?”

“Yeah, he do be looking at her a lot.”

Another nasty chuckle with a snort, this one shared.

Sis almost tore out a Braid. It was the birthmark that did it.

Mommy was out with Do-Good, hoping to at least get grocery money from him. When Li’l Bro and Sis got home and realized they had the apartment to themselves, they were both so excited with their news they could hardly hear each other.

              “Twin’s alive.”

The two teens looked at each other as if to say, “How you know?” Li’l Bro went first, telling Sis what he’d overheard at the barber shop. Then she told him about what she’d decoded at the beauty parlor. Together they figured it out.

Peanut had killed Snake? No. Not Peanut. Twin knew? Somehow Pimp Dealer thought so, and Man and Guy had kidnapped her and taken her to Pimp Dealer. He’d gotten her high on smack and he and his friends abused her and were using her for God knows what. Now she was down south, maybe even in South America with Pimp Dealer.

There were three unanswered questions. One, is that why Mommy had told them Twin was dead?  Two, why was Twin staying with Pimp Dealer? And three, where was her twin brother and why hadn’t he come for her?
