Adam Lambert’s True Colors
“He has amazing eyes…” – Andy Cohen
Yes, yes he does. Even Adam acknowledges they are one of his best features, and he knows how to make them pop by his artful application of eyeliner, shadow and mascara. But to me, what is even more wondrous is what he sees through those baby blues. Coming out of American Idol, Adam was probably unable to see much beneath the surface of the sweaty, screaming tide of humanity that overwhelmed him at every Idols show. As months and years passed, though, we could see stories about individual lives begin to penetrate into his awareness. We’d see Adam tweet support to one who was ill or another whose grandchild was about to undergo surgery. We’d see him be touched by tragedies that befell one or another of his fans.
Last night, at a gathering of around 70 Glamberts before the Home for the Holidays show, we witnessed another one of Adam’s acts of kindness. We learned that our friends from Long Island, Claudia and Mike, had lost their home to Hurricane Sandy. Claudia managed to save her large collection of Adam memorabilia (that’s what Glamberts do!), but their home was a total loss, and their fate has been cast upon the untender mercies of FEMA and their home insurance company.
About a dozen friends, organized by @wghluvsadam, @lambetterer and @NYHome, reached out to Lee Cherry to buy one of his special edition prints as a gift to console Claudia. They told Lee about Claudia and Mike’s situation, and Lee said Adam would be signing and he could get it to them in time by FedEx. When Lee told Adam what had happened, Adam wanted to personalize the autograph for them (even though the rest of the prints won’t be). When the friends surprised Claudia and Mike with their gift, there was hardly a dry eye in the room.
Our friend @EowynRohan wrote: “I just am always struck by how the people in this fandom have such amazing love, support and care for one another (following Adam’s example, hoping he would be proud)!”
What a beautiful way to celebrate the Miracle of Light this Hannukah season. Thank you Adam. Thank you Glamberts everywhere.
With love, J
