ADAM #2 FOR “NEVER CLOSE OUR EYES”
@adamlambert: WHEW! what a night! final show with @QueenWillRock here in London. What a killer crowd! I’ll post some footage later! 🙂
The three gigs with Queen were a new high point in Adam’s career. If you haven’t watched the videos from Saturday night, run over there right now!! Adam gave it his all, and so did the band. The energy and joy literally radiated out of every pixel on the screens of those of us who tuned in to the live stream and Twitter feeds. We can only imagine what it was like for those fortunate enough to have been there. And now there is only one thing left to do… SIGN THE PETITION!!!
Matthew Harffy Beyond awesome. I’ve seen Queen with Freddie, Brian solo and Queen with Paul Rodgers. This gig was the best Queen have, played since Freddie’s death. Lambert is a perfect frontman for them. His vocal range and flamboyant delivery is perfect for the music and Freddie would have loved him in so many ways!! Brian and Roger looked so happy. I hope they do some more shows.
Jakub Mikołajczyk 24th november 1991 I heard in news Freddie Mercury died:( Then i asked my mum: ho was Freddie. My mum said it was great singer of Queen. Then play “kind of magic”. I said : this is it. I love it. Next day i bought kasette “greatest hits” and i was the bigest fan of Queen in a world. I waiting 21 years to see Queen on stage. It hapened this night:) Thank u so much it was greatest night ever. Thank u Braian, Roger and Adam. Adam well done . Just great!!!!!!!!
Naoko Sanryo Before the show, I was a bit negative against Adam, saying “who could take place of Freddie!” But while watching their show tonight I realised that’s not what’s happening. Adam didn’t try to take Freddie’s place, he knows that’s impossible. I saw a kind of magic tonight. No more negative feelings toward Adam. Freddie must be proud of the band keeping alive the legendary music Freddie loved so much, as Freddie sang, “The show must go on.” Tonight show was just brilliant. It’s also nice to know Freddie is still so much missed.
Matthew Hirst Just left there a couple of hours ago was a fantastic show! Adam Lambert did some terrific vocals. I was expecting a good show. We got an EPIC show instead!!! All the best to Roger and Brian, you’ve still got it guys.
Philip George Desira We just got home from it and the entire f*cking show was amazing!! I love Freddie more than anything and listen to the original line up every day but it was the gig of my young life, Adam was superb, Brian and roger were masters and also in awe of adam at stages! They paid heartfelt tribute to Freddie and John in video and in song! And rogers son rufus joined him on the drums! He’s excellent!! This was an amazing fucking gig people!!! 😀
The Official Charts Company reports that “former American Idol contestant Adam Lambert scores his highest charting UK album to date with Trespassing new in at Number 16.”
And “Never Close Our Eyes” debuts at #17!!!
“Never Close Our Eyes” also lands on the BBC1’s playlist!!!

HE’S FALLEN IN LOVE!
More adorable than a basket of kittens!!
Fall into the glitter…
Queen + Adam Lambert at the Hammersmith Apollo, London / 11 July 2012 – A fantastic piece by @Audsidol about the experience, with wonderful insights. Well worth reading the whole essay. Here are some excerpts:
Adam was flawless, every phrase / every snap, clap, and spin was somehow both precise and natural, totally mesmerizing. He was ON! He tossed his head and stomped his feet on the beat. For each and every bar, Adam was the song. I’ll try to explain it. Somehow when Adam opens his mouth, you realize that his face is like the bell of an instrument, that the sound coming out resonates from deep inside the core of his body. I think he covers himself head to toe in clothing to hide the fact that his torso is covered with valves and keys or strings or something…
Dragon Attack was a total embracing of self. Adam is a strutting, red-feathered cock of a man with slinky hips and plenty of talent, and he is trespassing unapologetically right under your nose and into your fandom and f*ck you if you don’t want some of this! “Take me to the room where the black’s all white, and the white’s all black . . .” Screw the gray area, Adam vibrated with confidence. Beneath the squeals and catcalls was an almost audible, anxious drone of straight men reminding themselves by cautious mantra, “It’s okay. I’m all right.”…I tell you, the entire auditorium craned their necks to see every last inch of Adam strolling off the stage…
I was also touched unexpectedly by I Want to Break Free…Of course, Adam’s fallen in love with Sauli. Everyone wants “Somebody to Love” but there was more to it. He seems to have fallen in love with his life right now. He pointed to us when he sang, “I can’t get over the way you love me like you do.” Adam is having a love affair with his career as well. He’s not only free from loneliness, he is also free artistically from the confines of the mainstream industry. “You’re so self-satisfied, I don’t need you.” He believes he is going to make it even if he has to re-define what his stardom and celebrity entails. Maybe he won’t be radio’s boy, and maybe that’s okay. (Radio, blah blah) I think he might have arrived at a place of achievement where it doesn’t matter so much. I can’t read his mind, obviously! It was merely a feeling of balance and well-being that exuded from Adam during that song that made me feel all was right with his world and my world too…
During the slow exodus from the stage and crowded line at the merchandise counter, I overheard new fans lauding Adam a champion. They said the things all Adam fans have said that have told and retold his story from the beginning. “Who IS he? Where did he come from? What is THAT voice?” I decided to let them find out for themselves. The discovery of Adam has been an invaluable experience I wouldn’t want to spoil for anyone by gushing over them my personal influence. Ours is a uniquely singular fandom that for the most part encourages a variety of perspectives. Fresh thoughts not rooted in American Idol are welcome, I think…
FABULOUS!! Check out this Winkball video wall of interviews with people attending the Queen + Adam Lambert show in London. A few choice quotes:
Seems like this has given Brian a kick in the pants…
Adam does fantastic version of “Who Wants to Live Forever”…
So much energy…I’ve never seen Brian May so happy…
Can’t think of anyone better to collaborate with Queen on a new album…
I was really surprised by Adam – he nailed it…he brought some spark back to it…
I was very cynical but he proved me wrong. He was absolutely amazing.
You need a massive amount of charisma, and he has it.
Put the Needle on it – GIG REVIEW: QUEEN + ADAM LAMBERT, HMV HAMMERSMITH APOLLO, 12/07/2012 by @Freudenschade. “Asides from the man [Freddie] himself I don’t think there was anyone who could’ve done a better job as Queen’s frontman than Adam Lambert. He “gets” the pomp and showmanship of glam-rock better than any other popstar around and vocally he was more than capable of tackling some of most chanted songs in music history.”
Culture (Russian magazine) – Interview with Brian May (translated by Google with edits by Juneau) “Brian May – a figure in popular music is truly unprecedented. Clever and intelligent among the rockers and otvyaznoy professors, Mae – the only rock musician with a worldwide reputation, which is a Doctor of Science. Always polite, courteous, always with a charming smile, the man – the exclusive property of the ambiguous world of pop culture. They are hard not to admire, it is impossible not to respect.” Choice parts:
Culture: You recently traveled to Russia with concerts, which had as a frontman Adam Lambert. Do you plan to undertake this large-scale tour with his participation?
May: I do not exclude such a possibility. This guy is great. Adam is full of energy, he’s a brilliant professional. He has an amazing voice, and with very few comparable people in the contemporary scene. He has an enormous range, but he also expresses the notes beautifully. At rehearsals, I was sometimes overwhelmed with emotion. When I first heard him perform Who Wants To Live Forever, I was literally stunned, I was just not internally ready for such an amazing interpretation of the song. I get great pleasure from the co-operation with Adam.
Culture: And why did your co-operation begin with Adam? How and why did you choose it?
May: I think some things in this world are predetermined, prescribed by fate itself. Once Adam came on the scene in the show American Idol, our drummer Roger Taylor began receiving calls and sms-messages along the lines of: “You should pay attention to this guy! He’s great! He is like Freddie! He was the only person who can do his songs,” and everything like that. Of course, we were intrigued. And then the organizers of the TV show called and ask if we would want to play with the two finalists. During this mini-set, we found that Adam is really phenomenal. Then at the MTV Awards ceremony in Belfast, we along with Adam played The Show Must Go On, We Will Rock You, We Are The Champions – and he was again incomparable. Therefore, when shortly after the above ceremony, the Russian promoters came to us with a proposal to speak about our coming to your country with Adam Lambert in your country…
Culture: What music do you listen to while driving?
May: Yes, what you want, depending on your mood, from Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninoff to the Foo Fighters and the new album of the same Adam Lambert – I am absolutely omnivorous…
We have had a wonderful life – beyond the most daring and desperate dreams. And I do not get tired, every day I’m thankful.
BrianMay.com – Thank you for the music (letter from fans) Chris Jardine wrote: ….Before I went I was almost prepared to be not quite so thrilled with the performance, simply because Freddie wouldn’t be there. But, not at all as Adam gave the songs everything they deserved in his own unique way that just made it Queen performing at their very best. We all wish that Freddie was still with us, but I do hope that Adam Lambert stays with you and that you do more live concerts with him as the new singer for Queen, and that Queen lives on 🙂
Ticketmaster Queen Fan Reviews – Wow! So many 5-star reviews (and not just from Adam’s fans). Some favorites:
CJMcFlurry: Queen and Adam just completely blew my mind it was an extravaganza of sound and light and rock ‘n roll of Queen at their best. An unrepeatable experience that I never dreamed that I would ever be privileged to be part of. Adam Lambert far superseded my expectations, Brian May played as I have never heard him before, he was incredible! Roger and Rufus Taylor were incredible on the drums! It wasn’t just musically mind blowing but it was a real visual extravaganza too.”
CJ73: Adam Lambert stepped into iconic shoes and held his own, taking Queens music to a new generation.
chrisjinxy: As a die-hard Queen Fan for 30 years I was sceptical if this would work, However within the first 5 minutes all doubts had disappeared as Adam has an amazing voice and a theatrical presence that nearly rivals Freddie’s.
jamash: I’ve been to some really good concerts, but never experienced anything quite like this.
Queen are legends and it was an honour to witness them perform live. I loved Freddie and he will never be replaced, but Adam Lambert was incredible at this event – his voice is second to none and he had the charisma to pull this off. He was born to do this and I hope and pray there will be more collaborations with Queen as they worked perfectly together.
Shingingilly: I was doubtful about Adam Lambert trying to be Freddie Mrecury (whom I saw perform in the 80’s) but he was superb – a real showman and a great vocalist who paid the proper respect to the memory of Freddie.
Sean1810: I was apprehensive about Adam Lambert. Paul Rodgers was great but he is an old fashioned rocker, Lambert is not. However, I was left feeling ‘Wow, this boy can sing’. He is no Freddie Mercury (who is?) but he was terrific none the less. From start to finish the whole audience was rocking.
Herts61: I can see this show filling stadiums in America, and possibly Japan, and have a feeling that this is not the last we have heard of this combination.
Mitsy998392: Lambert gives a new energy to music that is simply too good not to be played live.
MatildaAway – Shot through the heart – A wonderful blog post by a fan who ventured all the way from Hong Kong to experience Queen + Adam Lambert.
Maybe it’s Brian and Roger’s age, maybe it’s the once-in-a-lifetime nature of the concerts, maybe it’s because Freddie was there, maybe it’s me hitting low and stuck in life, in contrast to the feeling of how wonderful life is and I will live the best out of it after the Glam Nation Tour, Queen+Adam had brought me to a place of what could be that is so much better than real life and I don’t ever want to leave. But that may be one of the reasons I ( and so many others) flew across oceans and continents to see them live.As Oscar Wilde once said, we all live in the gutter, but some of us look up in the sky. Well, these shows are just calls to forget about the gutter for a moment and enjoy the magnificence of the sky…
I can’t make the images fuse, but it still looks 3D to me…
PRESS AND BLOG PICKS
…A stripped-down segment, beginning with a piano-led “Whataya Want from Me,” was quietly effective. Backed by subtle electric guitar and a single drum, Lambert’s tender delivery on the personal “Outlaws of Love” (revolving around discrimination toward gays and lesbians) was magnificent and a set highlight.
Later, several concert-goers waved glow sticks during the slamming, electronica-tinged “Naked Love,” a jubilant Lambert engaging them in some call-and-response action. “Pop That Lock,” laden with double entendres, made its tour debut; the rousing electro-rock number included fun and quick synchronized dance moves by Lambert and the backing vocalists, who added a snatch of Michael Jackson’s “Smooth Criminal” at the end.
Ryan Seacrest – EXCLUSIVE: Adam Lambert On ‘Pretty Little Liars’ Halloween Episode! [AUDIO] “Next week they will start shooting a Halloween special to give fans a desperately needed fix in October. It will feature special guest star Adam Lambert, who will appear in a scene with Lucy Hale and perform two songs…that guy is a Halloween party on two legs.” Oy, Ryan!
@Kathryn17 I just found out that the Halloween episode of PLL that Adam will be on is called “This Is A Dark Ride”!!!!!
And this from Gigwise – The view from the other side of the pond…LOL!
UK Pop Charts for Week Ending July 21, 2012 – “There is however one act who has managed to land a new entry in the Top 20 of both singles and albums countdowns simultaneously. Step forward American Idol alumnus Adam Lambert, the charistmatic star sitting pretty at Number 17 with the single “Never Close Our Eyes” and at Number 16 with its parent album Trespassing. Both are career highs for him to date, Lambert’s debut album For Your Entertainment reached Number 36 in May 2010 whilst its title track peaked at Number 37 on the singles chart one month earlier. Easily one of the biggest talents ever to be discovered by the TV series, Lambert remains the most successful non-victorious Idol contestant the British charts have seen to date.”
Christie Goodwin Pictures – Queen featuring Adam Lambert – Prophetic: “I don’t watch a lot of telly because of my job but by odd coincidence I did see the audition of Adam Lambert for Idol 8 way back in 2009. When Adam sang Bohemiam Rhapsody for the judges I turned to Patrick and said, he has to win and I wanna work with him…Over all it was a joy watching Brian, Roger and Adam doing their thing while I did my thing. You know what? It’s gigs like this that keep me wanting to do what I do. I got such a creative high shooting Queen featuring Adam Lambert that I can handle any shit they throw at me for a while now.”
AAA Music – Queen + Adam Lambert @ Hammersmith Apollo “This is a true rock show in every sense and probably the best show in town and when they hit into one of the best songs ever written ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ which virtual Freddie sings as well, and consists flames and amazing visuals you realise Queen with Adam will probably be the closest you get to seeing a full Queen show again. It’s an explosive climax with ‘We will rock You’ and ‘We are the Champions’ and you realise this is one of the best gigs of your life. As a lifelong Queen fan I know they certainly did rock me.”
Star Observer – Lambert: All we want is love – “But at the end of the album we get to Outlaws of Love, and it’s like, I’ve figured all this other stuff out and made peace with myself, I have a partner, but as we look out into society, what are we faced with? It’s us versus the world. All we want is light and love and we’re being persecuted for it. It’s a sad feeling.”
TV|Line American Idol: 14 Dream Candidates to Replace Steven, J.Lo and Randy as Judges – Michael Slezak weighs in and of course gives his favorite American Idol alum a nod…Actually love the idea of Dolly Parton, and Linda Perry would be awesome. About Adam: “He’s rumored to be on Idol producers’ short list for the gig, and I can’t really think of a good reason the show wouldn’t benefit from signing its home-grown talent to the panel. In fact, I wrote a loooong blog item on the subject that you can check out by clicking here.”
San Antonio New-Express – Singer Frank Ocean is making people listen “If we’re talking true risk-takers, I point to Ocean and Adam Lambert, who came out just after “American Idol” and on the cover of Rolling Stone, no less. It may have hindered Lambert’s career a bit, at least in the beginning, but it seemed genuine. And now, Lambert is filling in as a frontman for Queen during overseas shows and topped the Billboard 200 in May with sophomore album “Trespassing.” He’s the first openly gay artist to achieve that feat. Ocean’s success is just the latest movement in what seems to be a big shift in certain areas of pop culture.“
@129aquarius: Just getting home and saw this from the London Evening Standard on @physcogramma FB page. I want a copy! A long-overdue new prince to enliven Queen without Freddie! 4 Stars!
Official Charts Company – Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody voted the Nation’s Favourite Number 1 Single “Bohemian Rhapsody would return to Number 1 again on December 15, 1991 following the death of lead singerFreddie Mercury. In its five week stand, it sold over 1,000,000 copies again, making it the only single to become anOfficial Christmas Number 1 on two separate occasions and claim the top spot in four different calendar years (1975, 1976, 1991 and 1992). Bohemian Rhapsody is also responsible for the modern music video. The video for the track was recorded on November 10, 1975. It took just four hours to film and another five to edit, at a total cost of £4,500. It was aired onTop Of The Pops for the first time on November 20 of that year. When other artists and record labels saw how effective a promotional video could be, they all climbed on the bandwagon – the music industry has never been the same since!”
Gather – Do Adam Lambert and Queen Have More Gigs Planned? “…As far as working with Queen again, Adam added fuel to the fire last night when he commented on stage during the last London show, “This is the last night we’re doing this here in London…for now…as of now…nothing’s definitive.” In addition Queen tweeted a tease about a future collab after the show: “Queen. Adam Lambert. Hammersmith…ROCKED. Goodnight!…for now…. “ If Adam andQueen are trying to get people’s hopes up about a future show, they have succeeded! However, if another Queen show featuring Adam as lead is planned, mum is the word so far as to when and where it will be.”
Capital FM – Lawson Hail Queen And Adam Lambert’s London Concert As “Unbelievable” – Video In case you were wondering who the Lawsons were who tweeted so enthusiastically Saturday night about Adam’s show with Queen: “The ‘Taking Over Me’ four-piece say the UK concert was the best gig they have been to. Lawson have hailed Adam Lambert and Queen’s live performance in London last night as “unbelievable” and the “best gig” they have ever seen.“
CarterMatt.com – ‘American Idol’ season 12: Miley Cyrus, Jimmy Iovine dream judges “If you want someone who can sympathize with the contestants, why not bring someone who knows a thing or two about being on the show? Adam went through this road back in season 8, and would have invaluable feedback when it comes to the performance shows. He’s also open, incredibly honest, and has already seen that he would be interested in the gig.”
AP – Adam Lambert on concert with Queen and possibly judging American Idol
Mark Gilroy – Live Review: Queen & Adam Lambert – London Hammersmith Apollo 11/7/12 “As the lights came down, the synth intro to “Who Wants To Live Forever” played, and a collective shiver crept round the room. For a while the crowd sang along, before most found themselves stood in astonishment at what they were hearing. I’m not a massively emotional person…but suddenly I found myself moved to tears. Music and emotions are so intrinsically linked, but I’d never before heard an artist capable of conveying emotion so powerfully in a live setting.”
Sauli Koskinen for FAULT Issue 11 (TEASER) Gorgeous photo shoot of Sauli. Sauli Koskinen, “Finnish media personality, smoulders in this stunning shoot in sun-baked L.A. Although a known name in his native land for his reality TV fame, Sauli proved to all of us with this shoot that he has many other strings to his bow…”
Adam in August 2012 issue of Japan’s InRock – Thanks to
Milwaukee Examiner – Adam Lambert’s ‘Trespassing’ “All-in-all, Trespassing is what For Your Entertainment should have been. The dance songs have all the attitude and uniqueness needed for them to stand out among a pop soundscape that prides itself on generic club tracks, while the slower tracks have more emotion and integrity than most of Lambert’s contemporaries could muster from years of work.”
Danarazzi – [ALBUM REVIEW] Adam Lambert – Trespassing “I think the thing that really sets this album apart from the rest on the market right now is that it does something that nobody has done before. Adam does a brilliant job of blending a multitude of genres together and making them sound great. We have fun and quirky tracks (Trespassing, Cuckoo, Pop That Lock), but also heartfelt ballads (Better Than I Know Myself, Underneath), bringing back memories of how the public fell in love with the star during his time on Idol.”
Muso’s Review – Adam Lambert – Trespassing – “What you want from Adam Lambert as a pop star is for him to surprise us. Though this release is long-awaited, it isn’t the sound of an artist who has been buried away in studios trying to create something out of this world. He has left us wanting more, but only in the sense of – is this it? The biggest criticism of Trespassing is that it isn’t a big enough statement… it lacks the defining clutch of singles to make any kind of worldwide impact.”
OK Magazine – Review: Adam Lambert Trespassing 3/5 “This is still pretty dance-influenced but songs like the title track definitely have a We Will Rock You/Another One Bites The Dust vibe. Elsewhere, the ultra-poppy Cuckoo is one of those songs that gets stuck in your head after only one listen.”
