A mini editorial by Juneau

I was on Twitter late last night and observed, in real time, as a fan who had obtained a copy of “Trespassing”, posted downloadable files of the entire album onto MediaFire. She instructed fans to direct message her for the download, with a warning to not publicly disclose the link. I feel very conflicted about this, but not so much because of the illegality or potential loss of sales revenue. I’m sure nearly every fan who DM’d her has already purchased multiple copies of the album. And it’s also a virtual certainty that the entire album will soon be pirated and available for free download somewhere on the Net. That’s just today’s reality. What bothers me is that it feels like spoiling the surprise that Adam has worked on so hard for his fans.

I’m not going to judge fans who, pumped up by months of foreplay, simply lost control and had to have it last night. I truly understand. But for me, since I began listening to music again, I’ve become much more sensitive to recording quality. Just as the speakers on a laptop cannot compare to a full-sized, great audio system, a digital download cannot compare to the sound of a well-produced CD. Maybe I’m just a deluded romantic who wants her “first time” to be unforgettable and perfect, but as desperately as I want to hear the full songs, I’m going to take a cold shower and wait for Trespassing to arrive in its physical incarnation. I’ll admire the handsome packaging that Adam and Lee labored over. I’ll touch that shimmering disc with reverent fingers and slide it into the waiting aperture of my CD player. I’ll recline onto my chaise, and in the soft glow of candles, wait for my B&W speakers to begin pulsating, for the vibrations to overtake me.

I kind of like the wait and getting mine in the mail it’ll be like an early Christmas present so think I’ll wait

I am just an occasional Twitterer, and not sure what sent me there late last night, but slap my hands and cuff my ears, I downloaded the songs that grabbed me by the snippets. It will not take away my excitement at unwrapping one of the 4 versions I have ordered and will listen to on my full surround sound stereo, aware ( since my musicians have schooled me) that the digital sound is inferior. And good for Adam for releasing a vinyl version which is another whole experience.

My take … who was the effin genius who chose BTIKM and NCOE as the first singles. I think they are the weakest songs on the album, which is absolutely brilliant and will send FYE to the “also ran” bin. We have several number one hits here, possibly a Grammy winning album. AND i want to see Adam with Nile Rogers, on stage, performing Shady. It is amazing. No, it is more than that, it is genius and will make Adam a star !!!!! The advance reviews were right on!

I am facing 2 crazy work weeks and several deadlines, these songs will be on repeat and will tide me over until the official version arrives.

Juneau, for once you and @therealstevegray are in agreement 😉

I think there’s near-universal agreement (from my twitter feed, etc anyway) about the singles released so far being the weakest – not that people don’t like the singles, just that most of the others are better. But the radio stations need the same ol same ol, it’s maddening!
Also really looking forward to Shady! Especially after having seen Sam Sparro live – he was fabulous and fun! Such a fan of him now too! – if he ends up on stage with Adam, and Nile, well, not sure I will survive that!

      • May 7, 2012 10:24 am

I’ve also noticed that, at least among the fans who are vocal on Twitter and vote in polls, the two singles are low in the rankings of fan favorites, when stacked against what’s on the rest of the album. All I can think is that the labels want to put out the most generic, instant crowd-pleasing stuff to gain wide exposure and maximize short-term revenue. But that kind of marketing is not going to connect the artist with his or her true fan base. Worse, it can alienate listeners who otherwise might have really liked that artist. It all makes me sad and frustrated for Adam. He’s always very diplomatic in interviews and says “radio is very complicated”, but underneath, I feel his frustration and resignation.

On a brighter note, with Twitter he’ll be able to see how strong fan reaction is to his own music. I hope he has a good social media analysts who can take that data to RCA when it comes time to pick single #3.

And, OMG, Sam Sparro, Adam and Nile performing together – that would be so EPIC!!! – J

I know – I can hear Adam thinking – when he says “radio is complicated” what he’s really saying is “radio is f#!*?d up!!”. Grrrr. And I concur.

No wrist-slapping from me. Half of me (the dark side? the light side? I don’t know anymore) wanted to download those tracks right away, so I completely empathize. But seeing from the inside how much work and passion goes into production, I also empathize with the artists’ desire to represent their work at its very best. Adam talks about being a perfectionist and control-freak, and I want to honor that. I envisioned a balance scale with my own impatient desire to hear the tracks ASAP against the months of blood, sweat and tears that Adam put into that album, and for me the balance tipped in Adam’s favor. Not that Adam or anyone else cares. It’s totally a personal decision!

Haven’t read what TRSG blogged about it, but I can guess that it wasn’t nearly as polite as my editorial. Now you’re tempting me to go download every track… (that IS the dark side reading her head!).

      xoxo J

I’m with ya on this one. I think I’ll wait for the real thing. At this point it’s only days!
Unfortunately, most people today download mp3’s only and listen on music players, phones, etc. only, so they are not getting the full sound of the recording anyway.
I still have my turntable (vintage 1982!!) but it has needed a new needle for years. I was on the verge of getting rid of it, but with Adam’s album on vinyl now I ended up finding (that was the hard part) and buying for $30+ a new stylus. Can’t wait to plug in my head phones and listen – well whether it’s the cd or vinyl – I want to hear the the highest quality sound I can.
    OK – I can’t guarantee I won’t peek just a teensy little…. 🙂

Also have to mention – I also still have the original first Beatles album – very much used – which I am looking forward to playing again! Scratches and all.

Your post totally brought me back to 1967 and the day Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club band was released. It was in May,( just like Adam’s…. nice precedent here ) college had just finished and a bunch of girlfriends were heading to Cape Cod for a week. We brought the album and my portable stereo and had that playing non-stop for a solid week !!
Sadly, the turntable is long gone but I may have to look into buying a 2012 model. Interesting, two of my sons are big into vinyl and rave about the Radiohead “record” !

if sony had been smart they would know that as soon as the album is streaming they need to have it available for legal purchase. this just shows how out of touch they really are. and attacking fans that just wanna hear the music is knee jerky and misguided.

Juneau, I was watching you on twitter last night and could not believe you had the will-power to resist! But I guess that’s how you’re also skinny and beautiful!

I won’t whine too much about my much whined about inner ear syndrome, but believe me, hearing out of my left ear is like a bad drive-in movie speaker (if you remember those) and right ear has a couple tones under normal. So the “best sound system” to me is not gonna be the biggest issue.

I had just been reading twitter how people were getting their boxed sets, but not leaking. Some fans were annoyed with that, but I have respect for those people. So it was only a matter of time and is was like waiting for someone to give birth! In fact some people used the phrase “the water broke” to describe it! But when Sony leaked it, no holds barred. I had a great time in a virtual listening party as people came on and were blown away at the full songs. No complaints at all. No “over produced” or “too pop” like with FYE. This was a love fest. So that part was very nice for me. Don’t get me wrong though, on official release, I will be up for more listening-flail parties.

Don’t follow that steve guy as he is a bully and not a friend to this site.

I’ve already paid for both .Plus bought again on Amazon. What I meant was why is he not charting. I’ve seen others that have unreleased music already showing up on charts.
