AI8 Redux Part 10: Adam Gets a Standing O from Smokey Robinson!

March 24, 2011

"Idolholic"

Do you remember it?  That first moment when Adam caught your attention?  That point in time which changed everything for you? I certainly do! So this week, before we continue our trip down Memory Lane with American Idol Season 8, I’d like to share that part of my story with you.

Adam’s “Ring of Fire” performance on March 17, 2009 was the turning point for me.  You saw some evidence of that in last week’s “AI8 Redux Part 9” blog post.  But there’s more!  Just 24 hours after I witnessed “Ring of Fire”, I began an obsessive “research project” that continues to this day (and which I know many of you share with me)!

On March 18, 2009, I started searching online for video evidence of Adam’s awesomeness.  In the following emails to my little group of fellow Idolholics, you will behold the birth of my transformation into a full-blown, bona fide Glambert:

Subject: The Many Faces of Adam Lambert

OK, Ladies, I went on Youtube & did a little Adam Lambert research.  I will be VERY interested to see what all of you think of him after watching these short video clips!

As I suspected, he is a BRILLIANT musical theatre performer…if you like that kind of thing (which of course I do!).  Here is a totally different side of him a musical version of THE TEN COMMANDMENTS starring Val Kilmer

He understudied Fiyero (romantic male lead) in WICKED & here’s a video of him performing that role:

Finally, a cabaret performance…remember my comment that he could play Elvis??  This “Elvis” hairstyle will surprise you!  The song is called “I Make You Crazy” and one of the comments suggested he sing it on Idol…wouldn’t that be a hoot!!!

So, now I’m going to predict we’ll have an “Elvis Week” and we’ll see Adam “transformed” with this Elvis ‘do :0) !!!

OK, now I’ve been YouTubing so long that I’m about to miss the Idol results show!  (YouTubing….did I just invent a new verb?!?!?)

Subject: More on Adam…and last night’s results

H., I agree, Adam’s sticking out his tongue is distracting.  But I think you are right, he does it when he hits those outrageously high notes.  I’m not sure if he HAS to do it to hit the notes, or if it’s just a habit.  If it’s just a habit, he needs to cut it out.  (The habit…not his tongue!!)

I would just get a HUGE kick out of him doing a 180 with his physical appearance and singing a ballad (without the tongue!) because I think he would score a home run.  He can do that kind of singing really, really well. [note:  how prophetic was this comment, just days before his stripped-down version of “Tracks of My Tears” where he was wearing a suit, no makeup & slicked-back hair?!?!?]

There are more Youtube videos of him singing this way.  For example, he does “Dust in the Wind”.

He is certainly interesting…and polarizing!…

Til Tuesday,

“Idolholic”

And now for the weekly AI8 history lesson!  The broadcast on March 25, 2009 brought us the Top 10 contestants performing “Music of Motown”.  Here is the order in which they sang (bottom three contestants’ names are italicized, and the eliminated contestant is in bold italics):

1.  Matt Giraud, “Let’s Get It On”

2.  Kris Allen, “How Sweet It Is”

3.  Scott McIntyre, “You Can’t Hurry Love”

4.  Megan Joy Corkrey, “For Once in My Life”

5.  Anoop Desai, “Ooh Baby Baby”

6.  Michael Sarver, “Ain’t Too Proud to Beg”

7.  Lil Rounds, “Heat Wave”

8.  Adam Lambert, “Tracks of My Tears”

9.  Danny Gokey, “Get Ready”

10. Allison Iraheta, “Papa Was a Rolling Stone”

Here’s Slezak’s review on ew.com.

And Slezak’s recap of the results show.

Here is my email after the “Motown” broadcast:

Subject: RE: All About Adam

Hello Ladies,

Yes, H., tonight was “All About Adam”.  I predicted last week, in one of my many Adam-themed emails to y’all, that he would do something like this…and I think it paid off for him, big time!  I wonder if he’ll keep changing it up every week from now on, or if he’ll revert to the punk-rocker style?  I vote for changing it up!  Go Adam!

Here are my rankings:

TOP 2 (in a class by themselves)

1.  Allison.  I give her a slight edge over Adam this week.  She is such a pro!  And then to realize she’s only 16…she is truly amazing.

2.  Adam.  WOW!!  He is Mr. Versatility, as I always suspected…truly great musical theatre performers can be very chameleon-like (and I mean that in a good way).  If he doesn’t win the whole shootin’ match, he’s at least got a lock on some great Broadway roles in his future, which is probably just fine by him!  I loved it that he got a standing O from Smokey (and everyone else, including Kara!).  How cool is that?  Anyone else notice how Adam always looks like he’s about to cry when judges heap praise on him?  I think that’s very sweet (but, bye-bye to the punk rocker persona when he tears up!!!).  He makes me want to buy a ticket for the Idol concert tour this summer!

IN THE MIDDLE (kind of interchangeable, week-to-week)

3.  Matt.  I think he should’ve just stayed at the piano.  He was a little pitchy, but very soulful.

4.  Danny.  Another white guy with soul!  But he can’t dance.  And a couple of his high notes were clunkers.

5.  Kris.  Looked good, sounded good, good presence.  Needs more confidence & swagger to convince us that he believes in himself.

6.  Anoop.  He was good but pitchy and a little boring.

7.  Lil.  She was pitchy, and she was trying too hard.  Have FUN, Lil!  Be playful, not forceful, with “Heat Wave”.  And thinking back later on, I realized her biggest flaw was that she was loud throughout.  Most divas are thrilling to listen to because they change up the volume & intensity (think Whitney on “And I Will Always Love You”).  It’s the contrast between soft & loud moments in the song that make the big, belted high notes more thrilling.  Having said that, I don’t think she could have done that kind of thing with “Heat Wave”.  It was probably just the wrong song for her.

8.  Michael.  His runs were out of tune and there were too many of them.

9.  Scott.  Pink pants??????  What cruel stylist imposed this choice on Scott????  They should be punished!  He looked like the stereotype of a classic nerd from the 70s.   Singing-wise, I hated the intro.  He’s such a sweet guy, but he has no soul in his singing.

AT THE BOTTOM (in a class by herself)

10.  Megan.  OH. MY. GOD.  She was TERRIBLE!   I totally agree with the judges, this was the wrong song for her.  She should have done “My Guy”.  Who gave her the 60-year-old hairstyle?  Ugh!!!

When I saw Adam’s hair and suit in the intro, I was sure he would be singing in the “Pimp Spot” (last singer of the night), but now I’m glad they gave that to Allison…she needs it!

Again, I kept thinking, how cool was it for several of them to get such wonderful praise from Smokey Robinson?

To Simon AND Paula, I have just 2 words:  GROW UP!!!!   The show is NOT about the two of you!   I was left completely speechless when Simon drew a moustache on Paula’s face.  My kids stopped doing that kind of thing in first grade!  I hate it when Simon keeps talking over Paula and admonishing her to “Answer the question.  Answer the question.  Answer the question.”  We all know she’s going to be indirect when criticism is called for, so just let her be Paula and let’s keep the show moving.  Jeez!!!

Can’t wait for tonight’s results!

“Idolholic”

After the results show, I was apparently in withdrawal and unable to wait a full week before hearing Adam sing again!  So I went back to the internet to find more videos of him:

Hi Ladies,

I’m finding myself stuck on Adam Lambert & learning more about him.  He is amazingly versatile!  Here is a truly beautiful song (“The Prayer” by David Foster…you’ll recognize it).  This is from a “Celebration of Life” concert for Yitzhak Rabin (late prime minister of Israel).  Adam sings “The Prayer” as a duet with orchestra & chorus…very, very different view of him (you can just watch the first couple of minutes) [note:  his duet partner is Noa Dori and they sing together in Hebrew]:

Til Tuesday,

“Idolholic”

I learned that one member of our group had not been receiving any emails from any of us due to an incorrect email address.  So I forwarded several of my Adam-themed emails to her, along with the first recorded admission of my nascent Glambert status:

Last forwarded email of the night, I promise!!

In rereading and sending these to you tonight, I realize that I have become OBSESSED with Adam Lambert!

…Off to bed now!

“Idolholic”

But I didn’t limit my research to just the internet!  No, I read everything I could get my hands on that mentioned Adam Lambert, including a great article in USA Today:

Subject: USA Today Ranks Idol Top 10

Ladies!

I read an amazing article in USA TODAY over lunch.  They have a rating system that makes me look like the amateur that I am!  Very complicated formula.  The paper version of this article has lots more detail, but here’s a link to what I found online:

http://www.usatoday.com/life/music/news/2009-03-16-idol-meter-usethisone_N.htm

Here are the scores I remember (100 points possible, and it is possible to get a negative score):

1.  Adam 85

2.  Allison 61

9.  Scott  -9

Have fun tonight!  Can’t wait to see what Adam does :0)!!

“Idolholic”

And now, your reward for reading to the end of this blog post!  Here’s the video of Adam’s incredible “Tracks of My Tears” performance, where you can relive Smokey Robinson’s standing O, hear Paula tell Adam, “You are exciting!  You are IT!” (how prophetic for all of us was that comment?!?!?), and watch Adam’s teary-eyed reaction when Simon tells him that his performance was the best of the night :

I’ve just discovered that the infamous “Results Night Group Number” videos can be found on YouTube.  Given what we now know about Adam’s star power & ability to command the stage, I think it’s strange to see him standing in the back row singing with nine other people!  I hope you enjoy Adam’s great moment during the March 26, 2009 results show group performance:

    What do you all think?

  2. March 24, 2011 4:24 pm

Are you kidding? This is my love at first note episode! It is interesting to read someone who followed as closely as you did, since this was the first time I watched and really only saw Adam. At this point, I rarely watched the results nights since I just wanted to watch Adam perform. I had not seen the “before” part with Adam and Smokey – that came much later, but the standing ovation from this legend reinforced my judgment of Adam’s incredible performance. This is an all-ages, all-sexes, for all time tour de force!

Oh, Xena! Happy Two-Year Anniversary of your Adam Obsession to you! Tomorrow (March 25) is your day :0) !!!

      • March 24, 2011 8:16 pm

I bet there are thousands of us with the same anniversary! Before that night, Adam was known as “The EMO Kid” which in my family was not an insult, considering my daughter was a real EMO kid and we understood this was just Adam’s style, not his attitude.

Clearly my reaction to his “emo kid” personna was not 100% positive. Then “Ring of Fire” left me, like Kara, feeling “confused…and sort of happy”. But the next day, there I was on the Internet surfing around for videos of Adam singing! That’s the point in time when I was hooked. Put all of that together and you’ll know I was thrilled with his successful gamble to “change it up” for “Tracks of My Tears”. Adam is a brilliant performer in so many ways, not the least of which is knowing how to give the audience what they want!!!

This one has gotten to me as it mirrors so many of my own feelings in discovering the incredible Adam Lambert and not knowing what hit me. It continues to this day.

I love that you are going back now and revisiting some of your own feelings and thoughts. It makes me revisit mine. And I have to say, I’m glad that I was a purist! I was not on Twitter, and barely on Facebook. I did not have any idea what others were thinking or saying other than a few friend comments on Facebook. Some of my “friends” were calling Adam “creepy”, and I was SO appalled. I was totally mesmerized and, from the response on American Idol, I thought the whole world was too! I felt so offended and defensive for him! I was already in love.

So it’s been a fantastic journey as a Glambert! I have had to find a whole new group of friends that understand where I’m coming from. And they are so special–partly because they don’t look at me like they think I’m insane when I express my admiration and devotion. And they don’t try to change the subject whenever Adam comes up.

I feel that way about YOU! Just revisiting your old blogs shows how you totally GOT him from the beginning. And it feels so good to read about that deep connection and knowing that I felt but didn’t know how to express. I feel a very deep connection, myself, with those who get the meaning of Adam Lambert! You are such a gift!!!

Mary, so glad you are enjoying this blog! I know exactly how you feel :0) ! I haven’t found those new friends yet, only 1 or 2 in my town who sort of get it. So I just bite my tongue around everyone. My family, especially, is not amused by my Glambertness. Very stifling! I hope to meet up with some of you in the future, perhaps next time Adam’s on tour? Chicago or St. Louis, here I come!!!

Thanks again Idolholic. Yes, sounds as though you were really hooked by now! I like Mary S was not online, twitter or facebooking and none of my friends was into AI. Just me and sometimes hubby to watch. Got to have my own opinions! So when Adam walked out in a suit and his hair back, I freaked. What? He’s not a real emo/rocker! But still was mesmerized by him. And when I heard him and heard the comments, I thought, He’s so smart. He changed it up and delivered. Now he is a legit singer and performer. No more doubts.
Loving the Slezak posts. did not read them before, and I see more now who the heck was loving Kris. Other than being kind of cute, I never got it!

Thank you so much for this post. Enjoyed the videos. I haven’t seen those ones in quite a while. What a talent!! I wouldn’t be surprised if Adam does some Broadway shows in the future.
I have been reading all of your posts and enjoying everyone of them. Thank you for all the work you put into keeping us Glamberts in touch with Adam. You girls are truly priceless.
It’s exciting to think that Adam may be coming to Canada for a concert in the summer. Hope he makes Toronto one of his stops.
I received my DVD/CD today. Can’t wait to watch it.
I truly hope to attend one of the Adam celebrations in the future. I would like to meet you.
