Adam Lambert and the Spirit of Freedom

This has been an epic week. First there were Adam’s triumphant concerts with Queen. And today we celebrate Independence Day in the U.S. Throw in a big shout out to the Higgs Boson, or to be more precise, “Higgslike particle” – it weighs in at the predicted mass, but pinning down all of its properties will require years of further study. Still, July 4, 2012, is likely to go down as a historic milestone. Adam. American Independence. The Higgs. It all melds into a wonderful alloy of joy celebrating human imagination and what can be achieved when people break out of their cramped cells and aim for the stars.

In the Adam Universe, we felt yet another tectonic shift. Hard upon the heels of his Billboard #1 album release, Adam’s performances with the legendary Queen will loft his career to a new plane. In this brief tour, he will be seen live by roughly one million people. One million bodies that will experience the astounding effect of Lambert’s vocal vibrations on their molecules and have their neural circuits permanently altered by his electrifying energy and beauty.

These appearances cannot but help boost Adam’s confidence. Already, between Kiev and Moscow, we can see him gain in assurance, engaging playfully with band members and with the screaming audience. Watching Roger Taylor, Brian May and Adam jam on stage, having a royally good time, was pure ecstasy. It felt to me that we saw Adam rediscover his rock n’ roll soul, which had gotten a bit locked down under the demands of producing and marketing a pop album for a mainstream label. If anything, I wouldn’t mind seeing Adam camp things up even more. (Maybe he’ll have to lose those medges; he can’t prance around easily in them!)

In the nearly two-hour long set, it’s almost impossible to name the standouts. One after another, Adam nails the songs – and puts his own stamp on them. Many are tailor made for his blend of attitude and vocal fireworks: “Don’t Stop Me Now”, “Another One Bites the Dust”, “Radio Gaga”, “Crazy Little Thing Called Love”, and of course “The Show Must Go On”, “Bohemian Rhapsody” and “We Are the Champions”. He takes “Somebody to Love” to church, souling out with an abandon that outraged the purists. And on the melancholy anthem “Who Wants to Live Forever”, he was breathtaking, his throbbing vibrato (also much maligned by Freddie die-hards) drawing buckets of tears from eyes around the world.

The song I have long dreamed of hearing Adam perform is “I Want to Break Free”. Among Queen’s catalogue of great songs, this one is transcendent. It speaks to the most profound of human yearnings, but is also unsettlingly ambivalent. “I’ve fallen in love” – it’s wonderful, but is it also a trap from which we year to break free?

The music video for “I Want to Break Free” is a masterpiece. Watch:

With the whole band in drag, it’s a huge, knowing wink at Freddie’s gayness – the entire band is in on it, giving him fraternal support that is as touching as it is hilarious. The video is also an affectionate tribute to the legions of women who idolized Freddie. Freddie dons a black miniskirt and prances about cleaning house, but his mustache and hairy gams give the game away. There’s a beast underneath, dying to break free. Just as Freddie is in drag, the music and video themselves are a kind of drag, with dancey beats and candy-colored melodies that disguise a darker truth about the crushed hopes and trade-offs we all make every day of our lives as we defer our dreams and smother our authentic selves. Even love can be a trap.

Adam sings the song in a more straightforward way. When he sings “I’ve Fallen in Love”, joy radiates across his face. He can’t help it. He IS in love, and he’s still over the moon about it. I would love to see him dig deeper into those darker undercurrents. Surely, he is experiencing them in his life. There are other things to fall in love with – like a superstar career with a major recording label – that can become traps. I don’t doubt that there have been moments when Adam longs to break free of the bean counters and opinion polls, and follow his own North Star.

I’ve been scolded by some fans for not being 100 percent supportive of Adam’s every song, video, costume or statement. I don’t deny that I have my loves and not-so-loves. But that’s besides the point. I’m a die-hard fan of the man, not just of his products. Adam transcends his products because of how he tries to live his life, as an quest to break free and be true to himself. It’s a battle that each of us has to fight every day. So today I raise a glass to Adam’s amazing life, and to all of us who yearn for that freedom.

I’m totally in awe of this blog!!!! Thank you, thank you, thank you, Juneau, for digging down deep into what is going on in Adam’s world. You expressed what I and I’m sure many others are feeling–the frustration with non-radio play and all the damn bean-counting. It was starting to feel like we were losing Adam to the powers that be in the music business. Then, along comes QUEENBERT, and he’s back!!! Boy is he ever back!! He seems to be in pure ecstatic joy to be singing and performing from his heart again. Yes, he has broken free AGAIN!! None of his loyal legion of fans can understand why it must be so hard for Adam, but it’s certainly his path and he walks it with head held high always. He continues to inspire and never gives up. I’m SOOOO happy for him right now!!

The crossover of Queen fans who will be new Adam fans cannot be underestimated. A huge percentage of people who see Adam live cannot believe what a talented showman he is. And think of all the people who saw the concert online and live on tv. It would be a wonderful boost to Adam, as well as to this alignment of Queen plus Adam Lambert, if we were able to buy a video of the concert in Britain.

Well, from one of Adams Cougars, I would love to see him do more rock and roll also, but right now I’m just loving Trespassing. Play it nearly every day. Right now Adam is getting alot of exposure and he must be living his dream for sure. Just want to see him tour the US hopfully sometime late summer of the fall. I wasn’t one of the lucky ones who could afford a trip to Europe, and from the videos I’m seen, I definitely missed a “beyond belief” concert. Adam looked way, way great. As usual.

Yes, I am as well totally in awe of this blog especially Juneau’s in-depth writing analysis. Hey, as well as the posters here who love ADAM so much. I for one believe that ADAM’s fans are not the average fans. Aside from truly being passionate, intense, devoted and dedicated, they are the cerebral type. I am just a humble fan riding on the joy of being a Glambert. We love ADAM for he himself is so intense and full of passion. I’ve seen somewhere that they start hearing ADAM on the radio. I hope ADAM storm is coming in US airwaves.

Please VOTE for ADAM on Vh1 GREATEST ARTIST of today. Can vote repeatedly:

I had to look up “cerebral” because something didn’t feel quite right about defining Adam’s fans that way. It was defined this way: “betraying or characterized by the use of the intellect rather than intuition or instinct”. Nope. Not my experience at all. All of the Adam fans I know are deeply intuitive and have strong instinct. Intelligent? Absolutely! Cerebral? Nope. Doesn’t fit at all for me.

I do mean intelligent. But somehow that’s how it means when used among my group of friends. Sorry because English is not our first language.

Hallelujah Juneau! This is a perfect celebratory piece to remind us it’s Independence Day for all our American Friends!!

Wonderful post! I agree with it all, except for one tiny comment, about Adam’s album being pressured to be pop and mainstream. If that is true, then Adam is not as honest with us as he claims to be. Because he has said time and time again how proud he is of the album, that he is making music he loves to listen to, music that is him. And he executive produced it and I’ve heard him say how his label is so supportive of him. So part of me believes you, but then why would Adam stop being truthful…we’ve heard so much about him, why would he lie about this one?

I was thinking more about the singles off the album. I feel the album as a whole reflects where Adam wants to go as an artist, but he was pressured by the label to release the two least “Adam” tracks as his first singles in order to satisfy the label’s marketing department. IMHO, they are trying to latch onto the success of WWFM and capture the radio market with music that isn’t truly representative of Adam. A very short-sighted view and a disservice to Adam in the long run, because it’s like pulling a bait and switch on the listener. – J

I agree with you about disagreeing sometimes with Adam and his choices. I feel that he didn’t need to say f–k in Cuckoo. How many tiny fans are drawn to a cute title like “Cuckoo” and might wind up singing it just the way it is. Just sayin’ But I love you more than I can say, my dear Adam. You are an icon already!

I agree about the medges lol. When he chucked them in Moscow he was able to move a lot more freely around the stage. I do love barefoot Adam.

I hope they come to the US. It would be a shame to end everything and they are drawing sizeable crowds. They are meshing together so well. I have this incredible respect for Brian and Roger. What wonderful human beings they are. They have had great successes and yet they come across as so humble. Well written piece Juneau.

Thanks Linda Jean. My hope/prediction is that concert organizers around the world are watching closely and right now in a mad race to get Queen and Adam to their countries. I foresee massive stadium shows in Brazil, Japan, the Philippines, Italy, France, Spain… : ) – J
