AI8 Redux Part Three: Hooray for Hollywood Week!
By guest blogger “Idolholic”
Two years ago tonight, my fellow Idolholics and I (along with several million other people!) were glued to the TV set watching the first of the “Hollywood Week” shows. After three weeks of “American Idol” shows featuring auditions from eight different cities, a total of 147 people had made it through to this next level of the competition.
In 2009, “Hollywood Week” was presented on four separate “American Idol” shows broadcast over a two-week period. In this blog, I’ll cover the first two.
The “American Idol” episode on February 3, 2009 showed the contestants singing an a cappella solo. Adam sang “What’s Up,” but we were only treated to a little snippet of him singing (a travesty, IMHO!). This short video clip also includes comments from Kara DioGuardi, plus Adam’s reaction to Kara’s advice:
Here’s Michael Slezak’s review of that show from ew.com (he briefly mentions Adam in this article).
The following night, it was Group Night, with all its requisite drama!!! Lots of airtime was given to the contestants who were, shall we say, having a bad day. Once again, not much attention was given to Adam on this show, but from what little we saw, it was obvious that his group absolutely nailed it on “Some Kind of Wonderful”. The clip below is a montage of at least two different groups that sang this song. Enjoy Kara giving kudos to Adam at the end:
And here’s Slezak’s recap of Group Night (again, including a couple of brief mentions of Adam).
At the end of the second broadcast, the 107 contestants had been cut to 75. Or was it 104 cut down to 72? As you’ll see in Slezak’s article, there was some discrepancy in the exact numbers. And there’s no way to verify the numbers because we only got to see a few of them sing! Ah, the agony and the ecstasy of American Idol!!!
Finally, here is the email I sent to my fellow Idolholics following the second “Hollywood Week” show:

Amen for small favors! I am so glad to see Bikini Girl out of the limelight! I think Kara REALLY enjoyed being the one to tell Bikini Girl that it was the end of the road for her!
I am SO SICK of Tatiana already! But I have a feeling we’ll be seeing a lot more of her. I think she is this year’s Mikalah Gordon (remember her)????? So annoying!!!
I’m trying hard not to get too emotionally attached to any of them [note: in the two years since this show, I’ve realized that resistance is futile where Adam is concerned!] I thought Hollywood week was done last night…but no! We have another week of Hollywood week!
I know they end up with 36 instead of 24 at the end of Hollywood week (I’ve been VERY GOOD about not reading any spoilers so I don’t know who those 36 are).
I heard that they were NOT going to have “girls night” and “boys night” like they have in the past, but instead would mix it up every night after they get down to the 36. Has anyone else heard that? Also have you heard how many will get voted off each week? It has to be more than 4 a week or we won’t get to the finals in time for May ratings! I’m guessing it will be 6 or 8 per week that get voted off, until we get to the Top 12 and vote off 1 each week.
I told H., I was interviewed by a student reporter for our student newspaper about our little Idolholic group. She’s also a huge Idol fan & we had a great time talking. I’ll let you know when the article comes out :0) !!
